Rumors of the Galaxy S23 Ultra featuring a 12MP selfie camera are not new. The entire lineup is rumored to feature the same camera sensor on the front. The Ultra model recently appeared on the official website of China’s TENAA certification agency with its key specs, including the front camera. But the listing had discrepancies in other camera details, so there was a possibility of error there. However, the folks over at Galaxy Club can now “confirm” that the Galaxy S23 Ultra model will have a 12MP camera on the front. As said earlier, the current Ultra has a 40MP selfie camera. The Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy S20 Ultra before it also featured a 40MP sensor on the front. So, this will make for a substantial resolution downgrade. The vanilla Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+, on the other hand, will see a minor resolution upgrade from 10MP. These two models have long had a 10MP selfie camera, since the Galaxy S10 days in 2019. Samsung is finally changing things next year. A higher or lower resolution camera doesn’t necessarily mean better or worse pictures. Hardware is only a part of smartphone cameras. The image quality depends a lot on camera algorithms and software processing. Of course, a lower resolution means you will lose details in zoom shots or when cropping the photo. But, for those needs, the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers up to 10X optical zoom and 100X digital zoom on the back.
Samsung is still undecided about the Galaxy S23 pricing structure
Samsung is reportedly having a hard time deciding the pricing structure of the Galaxy S23 series. It may be wanting to increase the price to offset the effects of inflation but that move may impact sales, though the upgrades may justify a small increase. With the launch rumored for early February, the company doesn’t have much time left to ponder. We will have to wait and see whether the Galaxy S23 series comes cheaper or costlier than the Galaxy S22.
